Quinn William Keast and No Regrets

Quinn devoted his life to his friends, family and the game of basketball. He enjoyed every minute of being around his team-mates and all he wanted was to win, in his final year, the Provincial Championship with that group of guys.

On March 11th, 2006, after a long, gruelling season of ups and downs, wins, losses, and injuries, Quinn Co-Captained The Handsworth Royals to what they had worked so hard for, Provincial Champions, with Quinn taking home Player of the Game honours.

"Its been a really emotional week... spending time with my team is something that has made this year as good as its been... I was so ready for the game ' I have no regrets."

Three months later, during our graduation night which we spent with family and loved ones, Quinn was caught in a traffic accident, and was taken from us much too young.

Everyone knew what an incredibly special person Quinn was, you could feel it simply by being in his presence. Some time after his passing, Quinns journal of his senior year was uncovered. What Quinn had written, and just the way he viewed life at such a young age, was something we could all learn from at any age.

N.B.A. two-time Most Valuable Player and fellow-Canadian Steve Nash wrote to Quinns family after hearing his story, summing up what we can all learn from "Q" very well:

"I AM INSPIRED BY THE WAY QUINN LIVED HIS LIFE. I WONDER WHY MORE OF US AREN’T LIKE QUINN?  I SUPPOSE THE TRUTH IS THAT IT’S NOT THAT EASY. IT’S NOT EASY TO BE HARD WORKING, UNSELFISH, POSITIVE AND INSPIRED. IF THERE’S ONE THING I URGE ALL OF THOSE WHO KNEW THESE QUALITIES IN QUINN AND WILL MISS THEM, IT IS TO BE MORE LIKE QUINN.  BE MORE KIND.  MORE UNSELFISH.  MORE OF A BELIEVER. BE MORE. LIKE QUINN ALWAYS WAS."

Losing Quinn made me re-think my approach to life. I had learned the hard way that life is a fragile thing. I did not want to spend years in college to work a normal office job. That wasnt me. I wanted to be in control of my life, do what made me happy, cherish the friendships I have, create more, and experience life first hand.

With Quinn on my mind, and in our hearts, three friends and I decided to buy 1 way tickets to Australia. After half a year there, I knew that I needed a life of freedom...

Its easier said than done, but I try to live each day with

No Regrets.
